Sergey Lipinets: ‘I wouldn’t wish on anybody’ the punishment I was giving Omar Figueroa Jr | DAZN News US

The 140lb fight ended in a stoppage.

Sergey Lipinets defeated Omar Figueroa Jr. by stoppage on Saturday night.

The former IBF junior lightweight champion stepped in as a late replacement for Adrien Broner, after the American withdrew as a result of mental health problems.

It took eight of the scheduled 12 rounds to bring the bout to a close at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, California.

Figueroa’s father and trainer, Omar Figueroa Sr., brought the fight to a close as the eighth round drew to a close after the battle became ever more one-sided.

“It was the right call to stop that fight,” Lipinets said after the fight, reported BoxingScene.com. “Right from the get-go he caught a couple of straight shots and he was getting hurt. I mean, gradually he was getting hurt more and more.

“And the body shot did him in, more or less, because he was just, you know, not even responding anymore at the end of the last round, before they stopped it. He was really getting a tough beating, something that, you know, I wouldn’t wish on anybody.”

The fight was Lipinets’ first since 2021 when he lost to Jaron Ennis, dropping down from welterweight to make the cut. He had been on the preliminary fight card before Broner dropped out.
