I-94 work will squeeze traffic in central Minnesota for weeks

ST. CLOUD, Minn. — Drivers criss-crossing Minnesota on I-94 will be delayed for the next couple of months.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation will resurface and make repairs to the Interstate 94 bridge in southwest St. Cloud in Stearns County, according to a news release. Drivers will encounter reduced speeds and one-lane traffic, in each direction.

The work begins Wednesday, Aug. 31, and is expected to be completed in mid-October, according to MnDOT.

Here’s what to expect:

Crews will close and work on the eastbound bridge first, then westbound.
The active work zone will be one lane, head-to-head traffic, 24/7.
Reduced speeds of 60 miles per hour, lane shifts and sudden stops or delays at busy times.
Motorists should plan accordingly, use alternate routes or travel at off-peak hours, especially on weekends.
Do the zipper merge and use both lanes until merge, then take turns to ensure traffic flows through the work zone.

The project is budgeted at $3.4 million, according to MnDOT.
